Adopting a Dog that Had a Long Racing Career

Hello All,

I'm about to adopt a greyhound (I've owned two who passed on). I've narrowed the choices down to three dogs:

The first two are females that never raced (even in maiden races). Both are about two years old.
The final choice is a five year old male who has just been retired after one hundred twenty three races! I've looked at his history, and part of his longevity at the track was that other than being bumped a few times, he didn't suffer any serious injuries. He seems quite sound.

What do you think, go with the young, obviously healthy dogs who were never subjected to the stresses of racing, the years of bad meat, the drugs, and lack of dental care, or go with what seems to be a healthy ex-racer who certainly deserves a good home?

My heart goes out to the male, but I'm wary of bad complications later on. what have your experiences been with dogs who have had long racing histories?

Cuddly Boys

The most coveted seat in the house is on the sofa between the two of us. If one dog vacates the spot, it's immediately filled by at least one other. Keelin will bark and carry on if another dog is there and she wants up. The other evening, Moose was happily enjoying being "King of the Sofa" when Seamus decided that he wanted up, no matter what. We need a bigger sofa or smaller dogs!

Blade the ladies man

We have been highly amused by Blade this past week. For some reason he (and he alone) is affected by Phoenix when she is smack dab in the middle between heat cycles. (possibly she is ovulating and he can tell?). We have had her checked for infection and none of the other boys seem to notice.

Any way 3 months after her heat cycle he becomes a ladies man. He will herd her, wash her, cuddle her, prance around her with his head and tail up and generally make a macho fool of himself. This week he wants to sleep with her - where ever she is (couch, chair) he has to get up with her/behind her. Then he will lick her back until he falls asleep resting his head on her. It's sweet and touching and hilarious all at the same time.

gotta love em.

I want dog food for my birthday

okay, the topic title sounds REALLY stupid. Just venting, though.

My birthday is this weekend and dbf's parents asked what I wanted. I don't NEED anything. They suggested gift cards. And I said "yeah, to Tractor Supply." And his mom says "no, because that's for dog food." Fine. Don't ask then. I don't need clothes or something stupid. I feed 9 dogs - darn it, I buy lots of dog food.

So this morning dbf hands me $100 and says "happy birthday." Then he says "don't buy dog food with it."

What gives????? Why is everyone so against me using my birthday money for dog food????

What would you do?

If your dogs killed a cat that came into your garden/on your property, would you tell the owner what had happened (or if you didn't know who owned it, make an attempt to find the owner?)

I was wondering about this last night as I had a really close call with a cat in my garden when I let Syrah and Zak out before I went to bed and it got me thinking about what I would have done had it all ended up badly.

I used to have a Saluki Lurcher who got a couple of cats and my two neighbours pet rabbits that escaped and got into my garden. Both the rabbit owners saw it happen so they obviously knew it was my dog, one of them was ok about it although very upset, but the other neighbour wasn't ok about it and it ended up in a giant argument as they suggested I muzzle my dog in it's own garden whenever it went out even though it was their pet that came into my garden. No way was I going to do that! So I guess some people are understanding and others aren't.

My dogs are so horribly bad when it comes to cats, so much so that I feel instant doom whenever I see one as I know what madness is about to follow lol.

So, would you tell or would you keep quiet?
